Default Women's rights and the bible

My most recent face palm experience,

During my summer off between semesters at university, I came home to visit my parents. During my visit, my mothers friend had baked me some cookies so in return I made her a batch of chewy molasses ginger spice cookies. She came to visit briefly today and we started discussing baking and how she enjoyed the texture of my cookies. She proceeded to mention that men were the better cooks and in response I told her that wasn't true and cited Julia Childs as evidence for this. I explained that it was because we've lived in a patriarchal society for such a long time that women have been marginalized, but given time and equal rights, it would balance out. I also managed to throw in a few jabs at Stephan Harper and the CPC for trampling Canada's gender equality agenda. She then proceeded to say that she was all for women's rights and believed we should all be equal on every playing field. I agreed and said that I'm amazed that there are still so many sexist and patriarchal minded people. She agreed. We continued to talk about how there may actually be a matriarchal society as women are now dominant in university studies. The conversation was great and carried on until she mentioned it all started in the book of Esther in the bible. facepalm.gifI just laughed and the conversation ended.

I find it hard to think that any women hold such views today. Whatever the bible / holy book teaches, society has moved on from patriarchal times, mostly, and western society certainly has. That's why the bible has reached the end of its usefulness in how society should be run.

Meanwhile, Chris, any chance of your recipe for the chewy molasses ginger spice cookies? I am a house-husband and I rather think they would go down a storm with the family. thanks.
