    Default Sunday shopping

I have never lived anywhere in Canada that has had a ban on Sunday shopping.
I just wathched an article on Nova Scotia reconsidering its ban on Sunday shopping.
Is the ban in place because a few people think its is bad to do things other than church on a sunday?

    Now this is pathetic....

    I dunno.

I like the idea of having a day off. It should be a family/friends day for people to get together. I think people (including me) can get too quick-paced and don't take a day off.

Germany has rules on not allowing stores to be open all day.

I think anything that gets away from all this consumerism is refreshing. It seems we all think that we have to live our lives buying every day or our society would collapse.

There was a Sunday shopping ban here in Ontario when I was a kid.

The only positive thing I see about banning Sunday shopping is that it's a boon for car clubs. It means that every weekend, an available autocross venue is only as far away as your closest mall.

Huh, I suppose, the wife says I never know what day it is, as I believe a proper shift worker should think.
I went shopping today and couldn't figure out why it was sooo busy. Saturday and sales day.

As zensunni stated "I like the idea of having a day off. It should be a family/friends day for people to get together. I think people (including me) can get too quick-paced and don't take a day off.",
in just a few I guess I can retire and rejoin the schedule.

My, how things have changed over the years! "The Lord's Day Act" of 1906 prohibited the sale or purchase of most merchandise on Sundays. Most stores were closed Sundays in Ontario up until the late 70s. There was one fur retailer in Toronto that broke the law repeatedly back then, was fined repeatedly, and fought to change the laws.

We post 50 years of age folk remember those days when people didn't shop on Sundays.

Labour legislation does require that workers get one day off work per week, but it can now be any day. Much more flexibility there for those who "keep the Sabbath day holy". There were religious denominations that objected to "The Lord's Day Act" because it specifically called for Sunday to be the day of rest. Seventh-day Adventists worship on Saturdays and felt the act had a negative impact on their religious liberty.
