    I like this. Makes sense.

Sorry that you feel attacked. I didn't sense that from the comments I read above.

According to a CBC article "in 1968 by a joint committee of MPs and senators that added the lines "from far and wide" and "God keep our land glorious and free!" CBC News - Music - O Canada lyrics to be reviewed

When I was in school we sang "God Save the Queen" because that was our national anthem back then.
As long as we are part of the Commonwealth we will not have separation of church and state. The Queen is the head of the Church of England. So it looks like the reference to god in the anthem is much more complicated than just changing some words.

I agree with Demojen that there are far more important legal battles to be fought, although I often feel there are very few who want to fight the same battles I want to fight.

    - - - - Thank you, Blondin, for the lyrics I sang for many years. There was no mention of a god, and therefore no christian propaganda in the song. But now there is. Somehow the christians wormed their way into our song -- OUR song, which means the song of ALL Canadians, not just religious ones. They took away my song. As I said, I cannot sing it anymore. What rationalist can sing about "god"?

Our song? Do you have any legal entitlement to the song?
You can choose not to sing it. You can choose to sing your own version. You can sing any variation that you like. You have no financial interest in the song

You're beating a dead horse here, repeating the same old song and dance.
If you don't have any better an argument then your story of woe for being "unable" to sing the national anthem simply because you believe that the national anthem (which exists in multiple versions now) should be concise and in line with your way of thinking, you will fail right out of the starting box.

Freedom of speech is a beautiful thing. You can sing what you want...but what you want to do is to shut up every one else who are instead singing what you don't want.

I am not happy about our national anthem (our officially government sanctioned national song) having lyrics in it that imply faith in a god, either. If fact it really bugs me, but then I never sing it anyway. This is for several reasons. The first would become obvious if you were to hear me trying to sing it, and the other is because I believe that symbolic acts of patriotism like singing the national song are merely pretentious and ostentatious displays. Anybody who sings their anthem with vigour but tries to restrict their fellow citizens' rights or believes their church or faith-based school more deserving of subsidization or tax breaks than other people's is a fucking hypocrite.

I don't like the fact that our government inserted that god-fawning line in the national anthem. I agree that, if they were going to make any change at all, they should have changed the "all thy sons command" back to a gender-neutral version like it had been before. In the grand scheme of things, I just think there are more important issues to pursue these days and it's not an issue that a Conservative government is likely to take seriously, anyway.
