Chris, if you liked Dr Strangelove you might want to look for a movie called "Failsafe" from the same year (1964). Very similar plot but without the tongue-in-cheek campiness. It starred Henry Fonda as President of the USA, Larry Hagman as a Russian interpreter and Walter Matthau as Professor Groeteschele.
I suspect these two movies did a lot to raise awareness of the insanity of the cold war. In 1971, when Nixon decided to proceed with the Cannikin underground nuclear test on Amchitka island (off Alaska), some friends and I took part in a protest that began with screening both movies at the U of Manitoba and then proceeded with a march around the American Consulate offices in Winnipeg. A good time was had by all though it was kind of surreal.
Incidentally, Kubrick and Sellers worked together again in "Lolita" - not completely true to Nabokov's book but very watchable. Another must see from Kubrick is "Paths of Glory".
