Has anyone seen any noteworthy movies lately?

Since January, I've seen: A Single Man, It's Complicated, Invictus, Daybreakers, Creation, Precious, The Road, and Crazy Heart.

Some of them were OK but nothing was absolutely phenomenal. Here's a short little blurb of my opinion on a few of them:

A Single Man was Tom Ford's debut to film making, he is also a fashion designer. The cinematography was absolutely amazing but the story was lacking. You can definitely tell the film was directed by a fashion designer based on the fact that everyone in the film is extremely well dressed and each scene is almost perfectly setup, visually speaking of course.

Daybreakers could have been a great vampire movie but they ruined it with predictable and obvious 'twists'.

Creation was pretty good, I think Paul Bettany and his wife Jennifer Connelly did a great job acting, but unfortunately the movie seemed more like a gothic horror rather than anything else.

Precious was good, it was emotionally moving and heart breaking. I was disappointed to see that somehow Sandra Bullock was chosen for 'best performance by an actress in a motion picture' during the Golden Globes, clearly Gabourey Sidibe out performed her. Even Sandra Bullock was confused as to why she won, and it was apparent when she received the award.

The Road wasn't too bad. The cinematography in this movie was very well done; the set design, costume design, everything was very consistent and very convincing. Viggo Mortenson and Kodi Smit-McPhee's performance were very convincing.

Crazy Heart was mediocre. Yes Jeff Bridges did a great job acting but the basic storyline has been done time and time again. If you've ever seen Tender Mercies (1983 with Robert Duvall), you'll notice that Crazy Heart is basically a modern copy of it. I'm not sure why Hollywood continues to produce films about troubled musicians, but I think it's time for a change of pace. Too many movies follow the same template of "man abuses alcohol or drugs/falls for a woman/quits drinking and addiction for her/goes for her and either wins her back or doesn't/end film".

I finally saw Avatar over the weekend. Spectacular movie... literally.

I also saw The Hurt Locker on DVD. While Avatar was visually awesome, I think of the two, Hurt Locker is more worthy of the Best Picture Oscar.

Oh man, how can you put The Hurt Locker and Avatar in the same category? The Hurt Locker was an amazing movie in every way, Avatar was a bunch of big flashy colours on a 3D backdrop. After that, the movie falls flat.

Although I haven't seen Avatar, I have seen The Hurt Locker. I thoroughly enjoyed it. I'm not really that excited to see Avatar - I'll see it eventually but those types of movies don't appeal to me.

Apparently people leave Avatar feeling depressed because viewers wish they could escape to wtv world they live on in Avatar. Did you guys feel this at all? lol.

To add to the list, An Education. Best movie I've seen all year.

Heh... I didn't put them in the same category, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences did.

No, not at all. It was a neat movie, but I'm not about to pack up to move to Pandora.

You may want to check out Avatar earlier rather than later. It's the sort of movie that's really suited to the big screen... and the 3D was cool. I think it'd lose something if you watched it on DVD.

Oh yea for sure, it's just that it continues to sell out at the Scotia Bank Theater in TO (I've been checking the past few weeks). Perhaps next weekend.

    Movies I've seen recently:

-Moon (If you like sci-fi without saturated action and explosions, you'll probably find this one pretty good)
-Robin hood (It was entertaining, that is all.)
-Prince of Persia (Cheap and had no substance, but entertaining)
-Shrek (Mindless fun. I actually enjoy the shreks more than most others)

    Movies I wanna see:

    -Splice
    -The Trotsky
    Truth Seeker or Opinion Enforcer?

I thought Moon was pretty good, too, though I kinda guessed where it was going about half way through. I read somewhere that there might be a sequel where Sam Rockwell's character is back on Earth.

I've seen Robin Hood, it was alright but nothing overly amazing. I downloaded Moon a few months ago but have yet to watch it.

Recently I have watched The Shining and A Few Good Men. The Shining was excellent, Stanley Kubrick did a great job directing and creating a very unique and original film. Jack Nicholson, as always, did a great job acting as a creepy psychopath. I don't think Nicholson could not sound or look creepy if he tried. As for A Few Good Men, it wasn't too bad but the 90's polyphonic music put a damper on it.

Has anyone seen Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb? Another great film by Stanley Kubrick (director of 2001, Full Metal Jacket, Eyes Wide Shut). Also, Peter Sellers plays three different and unique characters that are pretty much the life of the film and he did a very good job... such a great actor.
