Creation (the movie)

I thought that Paul Bettany made a great Stephen Maturin, the naval surgeon-naturalist in the film, Master and Commander. Now he's starring as Charles Darwin in the biopic Creation, which is picked to open the TIFF in Sept:

This TIFF pick is significant as well as fascinating.

The preview contains dialogue with the line, "It's just a theory." The description of the story says, "part ghost story." If the story is just a sop to the current culture war in the US vis-a-vis fundy religion and science, or if it's a supernatural story, I won't see it.

the part ghost story is that particular reviewer's description, which yes, I'm also suspicious of, and the "it's only a theory" was spoken by the little daughter character. it looks like they're playing up the conflict with his wife Emma, who was very devout.

I'd be surprised if they didn't exploit the science vs religion culture war, it is a high-budget commercial flick after all. though I'm also wary of the director (he did make Entrapment and The Core -- blech), it's great to see that a Darwin biopic is getting made. and the screenplay is by the same guy who wrote Master & Commander. so we'll see!

The "ghost" description was the director himself. I agree about The Core... blech. I hope this one's good, because you're right, a Darwin movie is a nice thing to see. As the years go by, I'm less forgiving when it comes to movies, and I find it very hard to sit through something even slightly less than good.
