So, does anybody here write? Anything really. Music, books, poems, short stories, or even just random jargon. I myself used to write poetry and I always wanted to write a novel, I just never get around to it anymore.

So feel free to share your own written works here, I may not write anymore but I love to read!

Well actually I write quite a bit but I don't get the feeling you would be a candidate necessarily to read it. Writing is a unique pleasure to be sure. Why did you give it up?

Nonsense, I'll read nearly anything. The only exception being stuff of such poor quality that it looks like a long text message.

I stopped writing because I just lacked inspiration. I've written a few short stories of recent, but I find that I either want to extend the story too far or can't make it go long enough, and end up quitting.

I've been thinking of starting a collection of articles for a long while now. They would be very anti-mainstream and would probably end up bordering things like http://maddox.xmission.com.

Most of them would be on society and politics, including a few rants. I'll eventually get around to it if I can ever get all my work projects done and out the door.

Another thing that's stopped me is that I have zero education in literature. But whatever, that's just an excuse.

Well I'm learning to write music. I've set myself the task of writing a round a week ( I like singing and I can teach them to my family and we get instant 4 part harmony). So far two weeks two rounds. One problem is I'm just not a lyricist, so I can get really stuck on words and fa-la-la, or A-a-ah gets really boring.

I write poetry. I prefer bawdy poetry and nonsense verse.

I might be a bit shy to post any of it publicly!

Please give us a sample, Stephanie. I love bawdy poetry and nonsense verse. I'm not clever enough to write it but I really enjoy reading it when I come across it.

Have you ever read of Digital Cuttlefish's poetry? The guy is a genius!

    For example:

In response to this story Cuttlefish wrote this poem:

    Some scientists have figured out
    A means of penguin-snooping;
A camera, beamed from outer space
Can see where they’ve been pooping.

The penguins stay on floes of ice,
For months in just one place
Which leaves a stain of shit so big
    It’s visible from space.

    The guano—smelly, reddish-brown,
    Corrosive, salty goo—
Leaves such a stain, ten colonies
Were found when they were through.

Of course, the waste we humans leave
Is seen from space as well—
The lights by night, the smoke by day
(At least, in space, no smell)

I wonder, once we’ve run our course
    And disappeared for good
Will, someday, trails of human waste
    Be seen and understood?

    Will future beings study us—
    As findings will permit—
And learn how humans went extinct
    By studying our shit?

    Fabulous!

I love Edward Lear as well...and Wallace Tripp.

I'll go see if I can find my old portfolio and type something out...it's been awhile since I was inspired. A lot of the stuff I write contains inside jokes which nobody understands. HA!

About 20 years ago I was a member of a poets' society and the fellowship of Bohemians was very encouraging. Up until about 2004 I use to write quite a bit of poetry and short stories. I have a very rough draft of a novel sitting in a box that gnaws at me, especially when I'm spending time writing other stuff that doesn't contribute to its publication. I use to work a swing shift monitoring alarms and could spend time writing between alarms and other mundane duties. The last 5 years have been so full of house hunting, renovating and travel adventures that the "muse" has pretty much fallen asleep.

I'm curious, Stephanie, about your Muslim boyfriend's opinion of your bawdy poetry, if you've shared any of it with him. My husband doesn't get poetry at all. He calls Leonard Cohen, whose poetry I adore, "Mumbles".
