    Default Subjectivity of Personal Experience

Hi, I am completely alien to forums like these, but several years back I would have sought them out actively had they existed. I am the portrait of the internal struggle of the simple obviousness of Atheism versus an inherited Roman Catholic dogmatic belief, and I spent the early part of my adult life and the entirety of my academic career weighing and examining both sides. Direct personal experience has solidly landed me on one side, and I feel it is my personal responsibility to field any questions relating to what I may have gone through. Some may say I have no place on a forum titled "AthesitDiscussion" but I would disagree.

I don't mean to offend anyone, but over my years I have found that a staunch Atheist and a staunch "Theist" who have any salt about them ultimately come to the matter of, "This is your personal experience that is more real than anything anyone can attempt to tell you about, and there we are at an impasse." Does this still ring true? Does a man of status who swears up and down from personal experience to either the lack of or existence of God matter in the modern discussion? I am truly fascinated to know. Does the black swan argument have a place here? Please respond with any thoughts you have, I would appreciate it.

Hi, ifso. Of course you are welcome here. People who insist on proselytizing or trying to 'save' us find themselves banned or exiled to the Shire but honest discussion is always appreciated.

I would be interested in hearing about your personal experience that landed you in the RC camp.

The black swan argument is used to illustrate why it is unwise to make absolute statements in some cases. The statement "all swans are white" is easily disproven by producing one black swan - one exception breaks the rule. I'm not sure how that applies here. Are you suggesting that one man's experience can (or should) outweigh all other evidence (or lack thereof)?

ifso, please feel free to jump in discussions or start your own.

I have a question, I have been asking christians for years, but I can never get an answer that isn't just a quote or generally others words.

I last asked jerimoth, to no avail.

I would like you to write down WHAT you actually believe in, and also a written explanation of WHY you believe these things. In your own words I would like to see an explanation that has your own meaning in it.

Welcome to the forum, I'm interested in hearing just what your personal experience was as well.
Faith, n. Belief without evidence in what is told by one who speaks without knowledge, of things without parallel.
Religion, n. A daughter of hope and fear, explaining to ignorance the nature of the unknowable.
Philosophy, n. A route of many roads leading from nowhere to nothing.
