    Christian Soldier,

you have to read more than a wiki definition of evolution, or more than the first line.
Natural selection is not a simple affair, when Ed and Fred were born, Ed wasn't selected cause he is faster and can see better. No magic fairy boinked him on the head to select him. It is selection of adaptations that benefit the creature, Ed can run faster and see farther than Fred, some of Ed's kids will inherit their Dad's eyesight and legs, and some of their kids as well and eventually the slower, blind kids starve and are ate by
cave bears. The beneficial attributes that were passed on gave Ed's offspring an advantage, and are more likely to survive. Nature selects the best suited to live, over generations of small changes.

    Default How Evolution works

    Christian Soldier, you state:

"I have been told that evolution "selects" that which is best for live"

I'll try to explain how what you've been told is incorrect.

"Evolution" means change over time, adaptation and movement from one form to another. It has no intelligence or design or plan or ability to "select" anything. It is a process, distinguishable from "progress" since progress suggests "improvement" or a preference for one species over another. A chimpanzee and a man are equal in the sense that they both evolved from a common ancestor and are suitable for the environments they inhabit. One has not "progressed" further than the other. They are the end forms after natural selection took certain beneficial aspects from the common ancestor, which over time led to these two new species, among many others.

Small changes in a species can help that species or a resulting species survive to reproduce. If a particular characteristic of an organism is not beneficial to its survival that organism will not reproduce which ends its contribution to the evolutionary process. Small changes can make big differences over time. And sometimes it doesn't take more than a generation of two to completely change a species. This is "Evolution by Natural Selection" which permits the idea of evolution without the need for a god somewhere dictating what happens next.

That you could make a statement like that just indicates that you have learned nothing from the examples and information provided to you. You have had many forum members provide explanations and links to websites with information about how natural selection directs evolution. It is apparent you are not really interested in learning anything about evolution or the scientific method. Why do you bother wasting your time and everybody else's by posting your infantile gibberish here?

I am interested but when I start to get information that seems to conflict I have to ask questions.

Thanks Rationella. Your explanation was the easiest to understand.
