Attachment 320A 13-story Islamic complex may soon begin construction approximately two blocks away from the site of the September 11th attacks in lower Manhattan. The building, called Cordoba House, is meant to be a world-class facility that promotes 'tolerance', according to the project's official website. Cordoba, refers to the city in Spain which was the centre of Islamic culture and learning in the middle ages.
The planned project has managed to gain support by NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg, who has said "If somebody wants to build a religious house of worship, they should do it and we shouldn’t be in the business of picking which religions can and which religions can’t".
Last May 29th, NYC Community Board voted 29 to 1 in favour of building Cordoba House, and now all that stands in the way of the project's realization is a building presently on the plot of land purchased by the Cordoba Initiative. If the 19th century Italian Reniassance plazzo-style building is marked as a historical site, it would essentially bar Cordoba House from being constructed.
Many New Yorkers see Cordoba House as an insult to the memories of the 3000 lives lost when Islamic jihadists flew two jet-engine airplanes into the World Trade Centres. According to the New York Post, one resident attending the community board vote said "I do have a problem with having a mosque on top of the site where [terrorists] can gloat about what they did,". Many others attendee's screamed and yelled in protest at the May 29th meeting.
