• Mosque planned near Ground Zero in New York

Attachment 320A 13-story Islamic complex may soon begin construction approximately two blocks away from the site of the September 11th attacks in lower Manhattan. The building, called Cordoba House, is meant to be a world-class facility that promotes 'tolerance', according to the project's official website. Cordoba, refers to the city in Spain which was the centre of Islamic culture and learning in the middle ages.

The planned project has managed to gain support by NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg, who has said "If somebody wants to build a religious house of worship, they should do it and we shouldn’t be in the business of picking which religions can and which religions can’t".

Last May 29th, NYC Community Board voted 29 to 1 in favour of building Cordoba House, and now all that stands in the way of the project's realization is a building presently on the plot of land purchased by the Cordoba Initiative. If the 19th century Italian Reniassance plazzo-style building is marked as a historical site, it would essentially bar Cordoba House from being constructed.

Many New Yorkers see Cordoba House as an insult to the memories of the 3000 lives lost when Islamic jihadists flew two jet-engine airplanes into the World Trade Centres. According to the New York Post, one resident attending the community board vote said "I do have a problem with having a mosque on top of the site where [terrorists] can gloat about what they did,". Many others attendee's screamed and yelled in protest at the May 29th meeting.

Firstly, I'd like to say that we can't pick and choose which religions can and can't build worship centres, however, at the same time these people are such damned hypocrites. On their website it says:

a center guided by Islamic values in their truest form - compassion, generosity, and respect for all.
It's like they are completely oblivious to the fact that their very own holy book, the Quran, asks for the annihilation of the Jews, as well as infidels and apostates. There is nothing in Islam that says Muslims may pick what parts you can and cannot follow in the Quran.

They ask for respect for all and yet quite a large number of Muslims in the west would actively support Islamic anti-blasphemy laws as well as Sharia law. These people would actively vote against gay marriage and curtail the rights of anyone seen in conflict with their beliefs, but they ask for respect for all. They protest our right to freedom of speech and to draw pictures as we please, but yet claim respect for all. It seems to me they would rather everyone respect their religion and ignore everyone else's rights and freedoms.

Instead of dropping $100,000,000 to build a silly worship centre, they should be building schools and educating women and everyone else in the east where corrupt Islamic governments and Islamic men beat their wives on a daily basis. They should be building hospitals and campaigning for open access to internet and freedom of the press in countries like Pakistan. If they are so keen on 'respect for all' they should start by teaching members of their own faith to respect women and children.

I would like to point out that in the Qu'ran it states that it is not only stated, but urged to kill anyone who doesn't go by their teachings. Not only that, but the Qu'ran INTENTIONALLY includes contradictory statements. The peaceful passages were written in the beginning and the not-so-peaceful passages in the end. This is addressed by saying if there are contradictory passages, the later passages supersedes the earlier one. With this being said, they are also allowed to lie to their enemies in order to fool them. This is why you hear some Islamics quoting peaceful passages, while others are quoting angry passages. So, what they say they are building this 13-story building for could be a lie and it is perfectly acceptable in their religion. I have nothing against any religion, but this is one building i would be weary of.
