M.I.A Born Free - What's your interpretation?

Attachment 308The music video below by M.I.A, titled Born Free, was accidentally leaked onto the internet recently. It has left many people asking questions, such as: "What does it mean?" and "Why are they wearing American uniforms with American flags?" Most people conclude that it has to do with genocide and it provides an alternative look at genocide from a perspective never seen before. Some of the YouTube commenters of this video have argued that America has been untouched by genocide, meanwhile others correct them by citing numerous examples such as the Aboriginals being cleansed from their land.

My own take on it is that I agree it obviously has to do with genocide but I also think it may speak to the recent Arizona immigration law which permits police to question anyone suspected of being an illegal immigrant. The consequence of such a horrific law will be, and has already led to, racial discrimination and identification. Since the perceived group of illegal immigrants is thought to be Hispanic, which to a certain extent it is, there are still a large number of born-in-America Hispanic citizens as well as legal migrants who will no doubt be needlessly questioned. This video provides an inside look to help the majority (white ppl) see what it would be like from the outside.
