A Vancouver based music teacher was sidelined and contract not renewed after she informed the school she taught at that she would be taking maternity leave with her lesbian partner after they had adopted a child. As a consequence, the school informed her that she was to cease all contact with her students in addition to being asked not to return.
Lisa Reimer claims that her contract was not renewed and that she was fired because she was a lesbian. However, the private Catholic school board that employed her claims that when she was hired, she signed what is called the Catholicity clause. This clause ultimately means that all employees must observe catholic values, even if not a catholic. Moreover, this means that living in a common-law relationship is prohibited.
