    The English Word Hell

    The old English word hell comes from helan, and means to cover or conceal. Similar words coming from the same root have a similar meaning. Hill for example is a mound of dirt or stone that covers the level surface of earth. Hull is the covering of a nut or the covered part of a ship. Heal is the covering of a wound. Hall is a building space which is used to cover people or goods. Hole is an uncovering. Shell.

    The following are notes on Genesis Chapter 1. The numbers in the brackets correspond with the number of the verse in that chapter.

    [1] The Hebrew verb consists of two different states. The perfect state indicates an action which is complete, whereas the imperfect state indicates a continuous or incomplete action.

  4. Apparently, I have a problem with proselytizers

    So... this evening at the mall, I was approached by a guy who really wanted two things: to find out what I thought happened when we die, and to give me a pamphlet entitled "The Final Judgement".

    I'm normally a pretty laid-back guy, but I got mad at him. Really mad. Our conversation started with me obviously pissed off and went downhill from there. It finally ended with me telling him that I'd go get mall security if he wouldn't leave me alone.

  5. Gripes about our Catholic school system

    Okay... I'm generally opposed to the idea that we have a taxpayer-funded religious school system in my province, but a couple of specific things have been really bugging me lately.

    First: when we got our property tax assessment, there was a new form inside... something like this (not my school board's form, but similar). Here's what it's for:
