    Default Sea Monsters

Sometimes I hear about creatures so bizarre that I feel compelled to tell others about them. Here's a good example of one: the Vampire Squid. Reading that description, what can I say? Nature seems to surpass our own wildest imaginations when it comes to producing such things. Fortunately, I can at least sleep easy knowing that the nearest one of these beasts is probably over a thousand kilometres distant in the most remote depths of the ocean.

Exactly one week ago I was walking the beaches of San Josef Bay, which is just below Cape Scott, the most Northern point on Vancouver Island.
I have been there before but this time something was different. There were significant numbers (dozens) of dead squid washed up all over the beach.
Apparently, climate change in combination with the el niñio effect caused them to move "Up North", where they got trapped in unfamiliar currents. The result being, a significant kill. They were not the (red) Fierce Humboldt Squid as shown in this news clip: http://www.kqed.org/quest/television/view/774 But rather a transparent white but large enough (2ft) to be taken serious. Serious enough in any case to provide breakfast, lunch and dinner for the local wildlife.
So yeah, as we found out, there we were, no one else around but my nephew from Europe, myself — and a bear....
