The group is already extracting DNA from other ancient Neanderthal bones and hopes that the genomes will allow an unprecedented comparison between modern humans and their closest evolutionary relative.

There is still a myth circulating, mostly due to Jurassic Park, that once the DNA of an animal is known, we can make that animal. Biologically, it is impossible with current technology. I can list the roadblocks, but I won't go into the nitty gritty.
But the most amazing thing we can learn is where our lineage split from our ancestors', there was knowledge of possible interbreeding, but this evidence will be revealed when this genome is unveiled. Quite exciting!

Re: Neanderthal Genome to be Unveiled I'm fairly certain that ten years ago it was established that based on what they knew about Neanderthal's genome at the time there was NO possibility that we were directly descended from them.

Re: Neanderthal Genome to be Unveiled It was my understanding we were never direct decedents of Neanderthals but they were a branch off of homo heidelburgensis, and homo sapeins were also a branch off of homo heidelburgensis. The neanderthals died off around 100k years ago.

It is not a missing link if it is not in the same strand of the chain that's all I was referring to. Genetics are an awesome thing.
